The Harvest!
We’ve worked the soil, we’ve sown the seed, we’ve watered and weeded the warm soil and let the plants enjoy the summer sunshine. We here in Montana have looked forward to the harvest. Just a few days ago we had a killing frost. Many things do not take that happening but thankfully God made some plants that tolerate cold too: carrots in the ground, kale and parsley are still happy. So we are still doing some harvesting. Even the farmers are still harvesting: sugar beets and dried shell corn.
Even with the work of gathering in and preparing the soil to winter over, we still think about the garden we want for next summer. We think about seeds and where we want to plant them, if we need supplies like trellises or garden hoes and how much of each plant we will need for our family.
There is a verse in the Bible where Jesus talks about Harvest. John 4:35 says, “ Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.” Jesus is looking forward to His Harvest; gathering in those that love Him. Just like our vegetable gardens, our personal human garden needs tending too. Sowing the seed is like hearing the word of God. It is like planting His ‘seed’ in our hearts. After we receive the seed, it needs to be tended so it can grow. Watering is like reading God’s Word, the Bible and as we learn God’s will, weeds need to be removed from our life; those things that God does not want His Children to be engaged in. Sunshine is important for a good garden and so it is for us; we need the Sonshine in our lives. As we become closer to Jesus our characters will be more and more like His; we will want to become like Him in our thoughts and our actions.
Jeremiah 8:20 says, “The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved. “ Jesus is longing to come gather His Harvest; those that love Him and are waiting to live with Him forever. We need to tend our garden heart carefully. We want to be ready for the most important Harvest of this world. Jesus loves each one of us and He wants to help us grow into that happy, Christ-filled person. We do not want to have to utter those words from Jeremiah. Now is our preparation time. Jesus has given us many promises. 2Peter 3:9 says, “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”
